some sewing for the baby

when i was pregnant with faith, i didn't sew. i didn't start sewing until she was probably a year old, so i missed out on stitching things for a little bitty. this time, i was determined to make a few sweet little things for miss leah, if only to keep her from having to wear only her big sister's hand me downs!

it all started when my friend maribeth (who just had her 4th last week!) and i decided that we were going to dye some gowns for our baby girls. i also found a bunch of white onesies, tees, and kimono tops from when faith was born that had clearly been used very little, so i brought those along to fancy up a bit with some RIT dye and fabric!

we ended up with various shades of pink, purple and something that was supposed to be turquoise or aqua but seemed a little more just blue! it's okay though, we made it work :)

for the gowns, i had an urge to do some sweet little hand embroidery on two out of three. not sure why since embroidery is not my strong suite by a long shot, but i love the way they turned out! the third gown i appliqued leah's name down the side.

the onesies were all appliqued in one way or another, two got little button embellishments and one got some rickrack! the blue one was clearly much too blue for a sweet baby girl, but adding a mostly pink appliqued bird seemed to remedy that :)

i've managed to add some bias tape trim to one of the kimonos and a sweet little embroidered bunny to a tee, and i suppose leaving a few plain is acceptable too! although, i do have six more weeks before leah's due to arrive, so who knows what i'll come up with between now and then!

i'm also gearing up to make a ring sling, starting by dyeing some lovely dupioni silk a friend gave me, but which was much too...gold...for me! bring in some blue RIT dye and now it's a lovely oceany blue green! much better :)

six weeks to go!

  1. Hmmm, I just noticed on the LEAH applique some of the fabric squares I left behind, I don't think any of those made the final cut to be part of her quilt..... :)

  2. So cute! And I do believe the little bird on the blue is my favorite!! Also, do you need some rings for your sling? I have some I can send you, my crafty friend, just let me know :)
