fall sewing projects

i haven't had a lot of time to sew lately since my doctoral comps have been looming large for months now (they started monday! one down, one to go and then my defense the beginning of november! ack!), but i have managed to make a few things to keep faithy girl from being naked now that the weather has finally turned autumnal.

(not that she would mind being naked. gives her a chance to show off her "booty dance," but that's another story for another day!)

a few years back, i was introduced to the lovely world of children's trunk show clothes by my dear friend jen. adorable, classic, southern clothes for kids. i bought a few things. nana and zee bought a few things. i loved them. then i realized my blossoming trunk show clothes love was not dave ramsey approved given our graduate student budget, and so i thought, "hey, i took sewing in middle school, i bet i could make some of this stuff. how hard can it be?"

best decision i ever made! now i can make adorable ruffle pants in the fabrics i want for around $8 instead of buying them for nearly $40. :) makes my dave ramsey budget happy!

so here are the pants i've made so far for this year! so simple, so versatile, so adorable! i've got a few more on the to do list. :) these were made following maribeth's system of making a pattern from existing pants.

i've also done a lot of appliqueing of various and sundry designs onto shirts i get for $3-4 at wallyworld or target. the long sleeved ones are even organic cotton. fancy that! these are a few of the newest for the season. two of these are felt applique, which is new to me but oh, so fun! (faith's dora tee for her birthday part was felt too.) the owl is just raw-edged flannel with button eyes.

so those are my simple contributions to faithy's fall/winter wardrobe. on the agenda are a few more pants and shirts, a couple of long sleeved peasant shirts, and a smocked christmas dress. my mom has smocked a sweet panel that now just needs a dress to house it. should be an interesting project and will be, by far, the most complicated thing i've attempted. hopefully you'll all get to see it on our christmas cards this year. if not, you'll know it didn't go so well ;)

  2. How cute! Those pants are so simple to make; no need to pay for them when you can sew! I checked out the Pigtails & PJs blog...I always used newspaper to make a pattern from the kids clothes. Guess I'm not that original, huh? LOL!
