warning: braggy post ahead

faith has always loved letters, learning which letters are which, what sounds they make, how they go together to make words. she's forever asking me how to spell things so she can write them down in one of her umpteen million notebooks. the girl loves words.

this summer, since it's been hotter than hot and outdoor activities limited, we've watched a lot of tv.

yeah, a lot.

luckily, we have netflix now, streaming to our telly via apple tv.

(dish network, you are on notice! after football season, you're outta here!)

on netflix they have gems like word world, leap frog, and super why, all geared towards helping little monsters learn more about the written word. we've watched those A LOT.

then, two weeks ago, while trying to wake up with my morning cuppa, i heard faith sounding out letters she saw in some book she was looking through. then putting those sounds together. and making a real word.

let me just say, i was surprised. i knew she knew the sounds letters made, but whenever i'd suggested sounding them out, she would sound them out individually and not get the idea of putting them together. then she'd get annoyed at me for trying to help her. so i didn't push it, she's not going to kindergarten this year so it doesn't really matter if she could read or not.

she showed me.

i took this video one week after the initial sounding-out morning. i'd gotten her a few of the BOB readers from the library in the week in between, and just like that, we have an early reader in the house.

i really need to learn not to underestimate her!

  2. FYI-- She is reading better than half of kindergarten students, in their 5th month (at least the ones I taught last year and we had the oldest students of the 7 classes). Way to go Faith...I am super proud of you!!

  3. Go Faith! Sounds a lot like E's progression (from "no, I don't want to sound it out" to full-on reader). It's exciting, isn't it?

  4. Awesome reading, Faith!! I am so impressed!! Kris, you have every right to be proud. I'm really not surprised, his great granddaddy Pumphrey was in the first grade when he was four years old. And, by the way, was reading.:)
