some simple non-clothing sewing projects

most of my sewing comes in the form of sweet little clothes for the monster girl, but i have recently completed two projects that aren't clothing! and both were super easy just a bunch of straight seams! can't beat that!

first up, therapeutic neck wraps for preschool teacher gifts. over the course of the year, faith had four teachers (she had three at the start of the year, then one had a baby so she got a new one!), which made teacher gifts a little more challenging! i came across a tutorial for a spa set, modified it a bit (didn't make the sleeve part, no time! and changed the length to 22" because i had some fat quarters i wanted to use, etc.) and filled them with a combination of rice and flaxseed for good cold and heat therapy uses. super easy, i managed to get them all finished over the course of a nap with time to spare! the fiddleiest part was the french seamed edges, they were pretty thick at the corners which was a little difficult to navigate, but all in all easy peasy!

the second project was to make a crazy dora pillowcase to go with faithy's dora sheet (which used to be just for preschool) and her fleece dora blanket, which she has used every night since she got it.

yes, we've completely given in to the dora. faith loves her so, and you know, that's all that really matters.

so. a quick trip to joann's yielded some super hot pink quilting cotton and some fun purple dora and boots fabric, which while it doesn't match the sheet fabric, blends well enough, i suppose. i started with this tutorial, added in some piping i made out of existing dark brown piping (that didn't match at all) covered with a silvery satin ribbon, and in less than 30 minutes, we have a hot pink dora and boots pillowcase!

i see more crazy pillowcases in my future, so easy!

  1. Fabulous!!! How are fitting all this craftiness in between all the reading and preparing for comps!?! :)
I know the teachers LOVED those spa sets and that you have quite a rep for craftiness all around Bartlett!!! You'll be making the monogrammed tote bags yourself before long! Can't wait to see you and Faithy-lee......sorry I won't be seeing Kevin.

  2. well, an hour and a half or so over the course of three weeks doesn't detract too much from the reading time ;) gotta take a mental break from all that every now and then! and this is just easy fun :)
